1. Publicize your return on podcast forums, other podcasts, and forums/web sites which relate to your show subject
2. Ask other podcasters to be guests on your return show, either via comments or a "call-in"!
3. Reemerge with content that encourages people to want to listen
4. Be humble, apologize that it's been so long. But focus your efforts on coming back better than before.
5. Understand that some people simply won't come back. That doesn't prevent you from gaining new listeners.

Speech recogntion company Wizard software this week acquired Libsyn, and announced that it had received $1.75 milion in funding from investors. Wizard has already acquired Switchpod and Blast Podcast, an advertising and hosting service.

-Adobe Soundbooth beta
Adobe has released a free beta version of Soundbooth, "a brand new audio application in the spirit of Sound Edit 16 and Cool Edit 2000" according to Adobe Labs' web site. Soundbooth is available for Windows, and Intel-based Macs.

-Zune: no podcasting for you!

-iLike
GarageBand.com recently launched iLike, a music recommndation service that works with iTunes and the Garageband.com site.

-BBC Looking for Podcasters to Cover Election Night
In an attempt to enhance its coverage of the American congressional elections, the BBC is looking for podcasters who can cover events surounding the mid-term congressional elections.

-PickleTales Competition deadline approaching
The PickleTales podcast storytelling competition is modeled on the American idol concept. Contestants submit five minute stories and listeners voie for their favorites. Those with the most vots move on to the next round. The ultimate winner will receive a $250 cash prize, one month's banner space on Podcast Pickle, and, as they say, MORE.

5 Tips for Improving Your Show Blog/Web Site

1. Dump the "blogspot" by buying a domain name. For just a few dollars, you can buy a domain name and make your site user friendly. What sounds better, www.aaronisadofus.blogspot.com or aaronistotallyawesome.com?
2. Make sure that your website features easy tools to download/listen to your show and make sure those tools are front and center. A brand new listener might want to sample your show and can't do that if they don't have easy access to do so.
3. Make your contact information readily available on your site. Podcasters have the ability to make amazing connections with their fans, make sure you're making that connection possible.
4. Try to make your site as "clean" as possible. Avoid putting too much on your site and eliminate things that you don't need like google ads which just clutter things up.
5. Create a website that offers new information on a frequent basis. A great example is Jawbone radio. Len has frequent updates about projects he's working on, funny photos that people can provide captions for and videos. If you build it, they will come.

-Next expo announced for next year. September 28-30 (yes it's 3 days) in Ontario, California. We'll have an interview with Tim Bourquin a few weeks after the expo.

-Podcast and Person of the year have been announced for the podcast expo. Podcast of the year was Grape Radio. Person of the year was Leo Laporte.
-A new survey from Bridge Ratings found that customers were more loyal to radio stations that offered podcasting had a higher rate of listener loyalty.

-Itunes 7 still sucks, but there is a new update.

-Next Podcamp is being planned for New York for Spring 2007 another one is planned for San Fransisco and Pittsburgh this November.

-Podlounge introuduces a podcast site for the Nokia N91 cell phone.

-PodShow "earns" and additional 15 million

Apple updates iTunes, iPods

* Video podcasters welcomed the iTunes update, which coincides with Apple's sale of movies via the iTunes Store. Video resolution is now 640x480, allowing vidcasters to supply better-looking shows. On the other hand, higher resoloution (it's the default export option for QuickTime Pro) creates bigger files. On the user side, iPod users are still limited by the resolution of their screens. The new devices are brighter, but not higher in resolution. You'll have to watch iPod videos on your computer or TV to experience the higher resolution.
* Podcasters are trying to sort out changes in the Category Top 100 lists in the Podcasts secion of the iTunes Store. It loks as if 25, rather than 100 shows in each subcategory are now displayed. The search box is gone from the Podcasts section, and you need to use Power Search (an extra click) to do searches.
* Windows-based iTunes users are reporting serious bugs in the new version, including audio stuttering, and possible data loss. The problem does not appear to affect Mac users.
* Most people seem to like the new iTunes interface. Shelly doesn't, but what else is new?
* There's full coverage of all the Apple announcements on this week's episode of iProng Radio. We'll have a full-on look at the new nano on next week's show. The Macworld Podcast for 9/13 does a decent job of positioning the announcements in context, though iTunes' software interface and potential Windows problems are not addressed.

-Another clothing related item for the Ipod, this time, the ipod panty. Does the world really need this crap?

-HBO expands their podcasting lineup to include a audio podcast for their global warming documentary “Too Hot Not to Handle”.

-Podcast Awards were announced, did the fans get it right?

-A slew of podcating services have cropped up lately (Hubdog, Podcast Ready, Go Daddy…etc), are these just people trying to cash in or is there a viable business model for podcasting?

5 tips for getting ready to go to the expo or any podcasting conference….

1. Don’t leave your home without business cards and demo cd’s. With all the contacts you will make at podcasting conferences, you’re going to need these tools to help remind the people you met who you are and where to find your show. Getting these thing together may take time so allow yourself plenty of time for get business cards, cd’s, tshirts, etc. ready to go for your big day.

2. Pack the proper equipment. Let’s be honest, it’s not likely that you’ll be able to do remote shows from your hotel room, or if you do, it might sound creepy to someone to say “hey come back to my room”. So plan to bring portable recorders like Iriver or Marantz recorders. You may even want to consider bring lapel mics instead of your $400 Shure mic.

3. Get your contacts lined up. Whether you want to meet up with someone to go drinking or to do a show, email the people you plan to meet and get their contact information. There’s too much going on at these things to leave everything to “well I’ll just see ya there”. Get cell numbers and make contact.

4. Figure out your gameplan. If you’re planning to attend conference sessions, know which ones and make sure you’re registered. Several people showed up to last years expo without registering for conference sessions and were told they couldn’t attend the sessions. If you don’t plan to attend the sessions, figure out what you do want to do ahead of time and put those plans into motion.

5. Double check your reservations. Make sure your flight times haven’t changed (both of my flight times have changed since I booked my ticket), check with the hotel to make sure they know you have a room, and if there’s a way to do it, check with the conference planner to make sure you are registered.

Five Tips for Podcasters Who Need to Take a Break

1. Be sure to let your listeners know one or two episodes in advance that you'll be away for a certain length of time, and let them know when you'll be back. Some people listen to shows from the Web site, so you might want to post an update there as well.

2. If possible, produce one show (or more) in advance that can be post-dated and published while you're away. This way, you won't have to notify your listeners at all, they won't even know you're gone! Most podcasting feeds/blogs allow post-dating so that posts and files won't be available for download until a date you specify.

3. Ask a substitute host to take over your show. This might provide a good bridge while you're away, and offer your listeners something different. Caution: make sure your substitute host isn't BETTER than you!! (Matt and Aaron are really worried about the repercussions of this idea. In fact, they're not at all happy we mentioned it.)

4. If you're up for it, take your podcasting gear along on your trip. Your listeners might enjoy hearing about your vacation. And you'll already have material for the next show when you return.

5. Finally, when you return, be sure to give your audience a re-cap of your vacation, ask them for feedback on the vacation episodes or substitute host. Be sure to make your audience feel as if you missed them, and that you're glad to be back podcasting again!!

Five Tips for Mac Podcasters

• All current Macs other than the PowerMac towers include a built-in microphone. You can get surprisingly decent sound from this mic, but you'll need to experiment with room acoustics and distance to be sure that you get the best results. When recording, remember to speak directly into the microphone. The further away you are from the mic, the more room and computer noise your recording will contain. Do some test recordings with GarageBand and export the results to MP3 to evaluate your results. Chances are that while the internal mic will satisfy beginning podcasters, those who continue podcasting will move beyond the built-in mic. Samson's USB condensor mic is a great next step.

• Although iChat is a great tool for audio chat, it's a poor way to record a podcast. If you want to record an audio interview on the Mac, use a higher-quality audio chat application, such as Skype. iChat simply does not provide the audio fidelity you need. To use Skype to record a podcast on the Mac, you'll need a recording app like Audio Hijack from Rogue Ameba that can capture both sides of the conversation. Both sides of the conversation into a single file.

• If you use GarageBand 3's Podcast Studio to record podcasts, be sure to export your file as a song to iTunes, rather than exporting to disk. Files exported to iTunes use the uncompressed AIFF format (the Mac equivalent of WAV). You can then use iTunes to convert your file directly to MP3 and to complete ID 3 tags. Exporting a GarageBand file as AAC means that your file is compressed twice; once to AAC and then again to MP3. this will degrade the quality of your audio.

• If you export an uncompressed AIFF file from GarageBand, you can continue to tweak it before converting to MP3. If your levels are too low, for example, you can open the AIFF file in Audacity or Amadeus, raise the audio levels, normalize, peak limit, and then convert to MP3.

• WAV files downloaded from Internet sound effects sites, and from k7 voice lines, are often stored in 8-bit, or even 4-bit format. They may also be in a low sample rate. when low bit-rate files are imported into GarageBand, they play at high speed. You can use Audacity, or even iTunes to up-sample the files to 16-bit, 44.1 khz sample rates. then import them into GarageBand.

5 tips on Joining a Podcast Network

1. Be sure to read the terms with a fine tooth comb. In most cases
you're agreeing to a

legal document, make sure your not being taken advantage of.

2. Does the network allow for your actual feed and web site? Some
networks have been shown to "hijack" your feed to look as if it's
coming from another site. Be careful!

3. How often do they require that you mention the network in your
show? Podsafe music network requires you mention their site whenever
you play a song from them, and that you use the PMN show link in your
show notes.

4. Does the network have advertising? Do you place it in yourself, or
is it automatically done for you? What control do you have over this
advertising? It's important to make sure that the advertising isn't
placed in odd portions of your show, or where your audience might find
it annoying. Kiptronic allows for before and/or after your show,
most prefer afterwards.

5. Check what would happen if you were ever to decide to leave the
network in the future - Does the network hold rights to your shows,
even after you leave? Do you have to edit your old shows to remove
content from the network?

-Richard Vobes becomes the first true iron man of podcasting by hitting the 500 show mark. The true amazing part is he’s been recording a new show every single day since he started in September 2004.

-Podtrac has tallied results for over 55,000 people who listen to podcasts. Of those 55,000 people, 56% listen to a podcast on their computer. For podcasters, that’s a complete 180 degree difference on how we think our audience listens to the show.

-Podshow is adding a very big player in podcasting to their ranks, The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd. This kid friendly show is heard worldwide and has a huge audience. It’s an interesting move for Podshow considering many of their headline shows are adult oriented.

With Podtrac reporting that users aren’t accessing our content they way we assume they are accessing it, making your content available in every way you can imagine. Make sure your website makes a flash player available to your audience along with other ways to listen such as direct download, download to cell phones and links to services like Odeo and Yahoo Podcasts.

5 tips to get your wife to podcast or at the very least understand the addiction….

1. Encourage your spouse to listen to the show and other shows. Your spouse knows the time that podcasting has taken from your life and they are well aware of the money too, but what they may not know is the final product so let them hear it.

2. Encourage your spouse to provide feedback on how to improve the show. It’s hard to care about something when you aren’t involved. Getting them involved in the process slowly helps them understand what you’re doing and might get them hooked.

3. If your spouse is open to it, have them contribute directly to your show by making a short appearance or make a segment just for them. The direct participation in your show helps them experience the preparation you make for the show.

4. If your spouse joins you on the show, make sure the encourage feedback from your audience. If you think you enjoy positive feedback, imagine what it’s like for someone who was skeptical to begin with. The same goes for your feedback, be encouraging

5. If all else fails, pull out the booze. Jack and Coke’s make for wonderful podcasting juice. Just make sure they don’t open up too much on the mic and end up telling the world about your obsession with wearing daisy dukes.

1. Nokia has introduced a phone that supports podcasting. This is one of the first phones to offer podcast support directly in the phone’s menu system. Palm has announced a recent upgrade to their OS will also support podcasting.

2. Trypod announces they will be doing a network wide promotion for the month of May called Trading Podcasters. Each show on Trypod’s network will have a show during the month that will feature a different cohost. You can read more about it at Trypodnetwork.com.

3. Sorry to say but Podcast Pickle did not win in the webby awards but it is always an honor to be nominated.

4. And sorry but we can’t ignore this, a company called PopXpress has announced they will carry an Ipod Bra. The bra will feature the ability to connect to your ipod and controls will be built into the fabric. So next time you try to feel up your wife, hopefully you won’t blow her ears out by touching the volume controls.

Question of the week...or two
Should you tell your family that you podcast? A lot of people do shows without their family knowing a thing about it, should you tell people about it, or keep things on the d/l?

5 tips for doing for changing things up on your show

1. Don’t go crazy. If you feel like your show needs some tweaking, you’re probably right but doing a overhaul of your entire show isn’t always a great idea. Some shows like Cheap Date can pull it off, others have taken away some of the best parts.

2. Let someone who’s never listened to the show give it a fair and critical listen. Often someone who knows nothing about your show can offer the best insights.

3. Make your changes fun for the audience. Do things like change up your segments, add a contest element, put in interviews…..etc. Just make your changes to the benefit of your audience.

4. Don’t be afraid to continue to make changes. Keeping things fresh and new makes it fun for your listeners, and it might make things fun for you too.

5. Make sure your changes don’t end up being a copy of another show. How many American Idol updates segments does podcasting need? Check around and make sure you’re not just following the crowd. Being a trendsetter is how to keep your audience hooked.

5 tips...on how to do an interview

1.When you contact the person you wish to interview, let them know what your show is about and what you like to talk about with them.

2.Now comes the fun part….research! Really work to know your interviewee and the topic you are going to discuss. The small stuff really matters and it helps you ask great questions.

3.When doing an interview, let them do the talking. While they are talking, have a notepad by so you can write down any questions that come out of what they are saying but also make sure to listen to their answer.

4.Always prepare to change things up during the interview, it’s ok not to ask a question in favor of talking about something else you didn’t write down.

5.(thanks to Rob from podcast 411 for this one) Ask your interviewee if there’s anything you didn’t talk about that they’d like to discuss. This allows you to tie up any loose ends.
